Embroidery can be categorized by the type of fabric used or by the style or relationship of the stich and location of the fabric.

Free embroidery is when a design is used without any regard to the underlying fabric weave. Some examples include traditional chinese embroidery and crewel.

Counted-Thread embroidery is where pre-determined threads are used for stiching patterns. This is more easily used on a fabric that is even weaved such as with aida cloth, canvas, or linen. Some examples include cross stitch and needlepoint.

Surface embroidery is where the foundation top is used with patterns to include laid threads and decorative stitching. This includes cross stitch.

Canvas embroidery work includes threads with a fabric stitched mesh creating a dense pattern covering the entire fabric foundation. An example would be the traditional hand embrodery from Vietnam.
